This device can attach to any safety belt to ensure the driver has adjusted it properly. This is especially important in FIA Formula E, where drivers change cars halfway through the event and have to reset their belts quickly, and also in sportscar racing, where drivers take turns at the wheel and strap each other into the cockpit during pitstops. When it is introduced, the load cell light will come on when a driver has tightened the belts correctly.
The measurement device is not fitted on the load pack of the seatbelts, so in the event of a crash, it would not impact on their performance.
The device is being trialled in Formula E in the 2015/16 season with a view to compulsory use in future seasons.
