Biography
Dr. Erin McCandless is a seasoned scholar, policy adviser and practitioner, with nearly three decades experience working in conflict- and crisis-affected, fragile and transitional settings. Her focus lies on understanding these contexts and how processes of peacemaking, peacebuilding and transformative social change unfold and nurtured in synergistic ways towards the fostering of more just, sustainable and peaceful futures. Her current affiliations include Research Associate in the Politics Department at the University of Witwatersrand; Associate Fellow at the Global Institute for Strategic Research in Qatar; Associate Researcher at the German government’s Institute for Development and Sustainability (IDOS); Visiting Professor at Kenya’s Riara University
Her primary research is focused on how resilient and inclusive social contracts are forged through peace and political settlement processes in transitional settings and builds upon a multi-country research and policy dialogue project that she directed between 2015 and 2018. Dr. Dr. McCandless co-founded and is a virtual collections editor of the internationally peer reviewed Journal of Peacebuilding and Development, and regularly collaborates with the United Nations and other international and civil society organizations, conducting research and evaluation, and facilitating strategic, policy-relevant processes and training. Her bridging of scholarship, policy and practice allows her to offer real-world orientation to her scholarly work and apply robust methods and a wide knowledge of literature and evidence to her policy and practice.
